I made this pen for my brother for christmas. He is a high school band director and bass guitar player. Fret board is some kind of ebony with maple for fret dividers and toothpicks for dots. The body of the pen is a really nice piece of paduak with black swirls in it. The scan sucks---the white marks are artifacts---it looks pretty cool in person.

Fanfriggintastic!
Any chance of seeing it in a photo as oppsed to a scan.
Laser? We don't need no steenking laser!
If you were to attempt another I would suggest aluminum flashing for the frets, Rosewood for the body of the pen.
The position markers could be abalone or mother of pearl inlayed after it is turned round.
Regardless that is a heck of a job.

Very nice idea and execution. Agree with Eagle's comment about the mother of pearl position markers. Read in an inlay book that you can make real small dots by gluing mother of pearl to a drill rod, put it in the drill and sand down to round. Use a dust mask as pearl dust can be a bit nasty. Great supply for pearl is www.luthiersupply.com (no connection - just a grat source)
