LA chapter help, Please

I have a friend of mine that lives in Slidell, LA. He's a local police officer in one of the local parishes. He was in the Army for a bit. Typical "I need to do something to get away from the job" situation. He is very interested in pen making. I live here in Houston, Tx and it's not very easy to help him. He is a true beginner. He has nothing but wants to start badly. I would like to know if there is anyone out here that can point him in the right direction. I think he needs a basics class. He's never done any woodworking. Plus a place to find his tools and materials. Please let me know if you can help him.

We are based out of Texarkana. Looks like you are closer than any of us.
I just checked www.woodturner.org and found several AAW clubs in and around LA. I am in two AAW clubs and there are penturners in both clubs that are not on IAP. Plus most clubs have a wealth of knowledge to offer,I would try to find an AAW club close and latch on.
