I leave my PC on 24/7 and on the internet 24/7 and I am usually logged onto this and a few other sites and just hit the refresh button to update the latest messages. So I would probably show "online" even when I'm out fishing!
Most forums that show you online resets about every 10 minutes (generally adjustable, also). And show you online only when your active on the forum. If you don't click for 10 minutes you are moved slowly to the bottom of the activity list and then drop off.

I'm used to using Invisions forums and like when I could see those who were online. FYI, if you don't want to show online, you can select that option when you login.

If you can't chat with someone live, what difference does it make to know who is online?

One of the Georges!
